The Steinbach Pistons lost their opening game of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League Showcase Monday Night at the Seven Oaks Sportsplex in Winnipeg. Sebastian Hamming scored 2:52 into overtime to lift the OCN Blizzard past Steinbach 4-3. Connor Paronuzzi, Jackson Kostiuk and Grady Hoffman with his ninth of the season did the goal scoring for the defending Turnbull Cup champions. The Pistons play their final game of the Showcase Wednesday afternoon against the Neepawa Titans. Kaycee Coyle had two goals and two assists as Niverville defeated the Dauphin Kings 5-2. Nathan Brown, Ty Kennett and Michael Tanchak also scored for the Nighthawks who face OCN today (4 p.m.) to wrap their two-game Showcase schedule.


The Winkler Flyers are the number one team in the Canadian Junior Hockey League's Top 20 Rankings for the second week in a row. The Flyers (9-0) are the only undefeated team in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. The reigning Turnbull Cup champion Steinbach Pistons (9-2-1) are back in the Top 20 rankings at number 10. The MJHL's West Division leading Dauphin Kings (7-2) jumped two spots from 14 to number 12. 


Hockey Canada has announced the 44 players who will compete with Team Canada Red and Team Canada White at the 2023 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, November 2nd-11th in Charlottetown & Summerside, Prince Edward Island. Peyton Kettles of Winnipeg, who plays for the Swift Current Broncos, is on the Team Canada Red roster while Cole Temple of Brandon, who plays for the Regina Pats, is on the Team Canada White roster. 


The Winnipeg Jets face the St. Louis Blues tonight (7:45 p.m.) at Canada Life Centre. The Jets announced Monday that Scott Arniel has taken over the head coaching duties on an interim basis. Rick Bowness took a leave of absence to be with his wife Judy who suffered a seizure on Sunday evening. She was taken to hospital where she remains while undergoing further testing.


Craig Dickenson won't be back as head coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The CFL team says it won't be renewing his contract. The Riders lost their last seven games of the regular season. They were eliminated from post-season contention on Saturday when they blew a late lead and lost at home 29-26 to the Toronto Argonauts.
