Brady Oliveira is the Winnipeg Blue Bombers nominee for the CFL Most Outstanding Player Award and Top Canadian. The 26-year-old Winnipeg native leads the league in rushing with 1,498 yards and nine touchdowns. Willie Jefferson is the Bombers Most Outstanding Defensive Player. The 2021 CFL Defensive Player of the Year leads the team with 11 quarterback sacks and three forced fumbles. Jermarcus Hardrick is the Most Outstanding Lineman; kicker Sergio Castillo is the Most Outstanding Special Teams Player and punter Jamieson Sheahan is Winnipeg’s Most Outstanding Rookie. The West and East Division finalists will be announced Wednesday, November 1st.


Steinbach Regional lost its Winnipeg High School Hockey League home opener Wednesday at the T.G. Smith Arena. Finn Bjornson recorded the shutout as the River East Kodiaks defeated the Sabres 4-0.


The Steinbach Pistons won their final game of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League Showcase. Brandon Funk had a hat trick and Kirk Mullen chipped in with four helpers as the reigning Turnbull Cup champions downed the Neepawa Titans 5-1 at the Seven Oaks Sportsplex. Connor Paronuzzi and Grady Hoffman with his league leading 10th of the season also scored for the Pistons. Beck Liden stopped 16 of the 17 shots he faced.


The Red River Wild scored three goals in the second period and three more in the third and beat the Winkler Royals 6-3 Wednesday night in the South Eastern Manitoba Hockey League season opener for both teams. Jonah Wasylak had a pair of goals for the Wild and the rest went to Justin Baudry, TJ Matuszewski, Paul Remillard and Justin Giesbrecht also scored for Red River. Aaron Lewadniuk and Remi Laurencelle replied for the Royals. Winkler netminder Jayme Janzen faced 88 shots.


CurlManitoba’s first provincial championships of the 2023-24 season begins tonight with draws at 6 p.m. & 9 p.m. at the Fort Rouge Curling Club in Winnipeg. 12 men’s teams and nine women’s teams are entered in the Curling Club Championships.


Rhonda Orr and Braxton Kuntz are Golf Manitoba’s Female & Male Amateur Golfers of the Year. Orr, who previously won the award in 2016, 2018, 2019 & 2022, captured the Provincial Senior Championship; finished third in the Mid-Amateur Championship and ninth at the Women’s Amateur. She tied for seventh at the Canadian Women’s Senior Championship and also qualified for the U.S. Senior Women’s Open. Kuntz won the Manitoba Match Play Championship and the Men’s Amateur Championship. South of the border he placed fourth in the Gulf Coast Collegiate Championship; tied for sixth at the Colin Montgomerie Invitational and tied for seventh at the Tunica National Intercollegiate Championship. The Breezy Bend member also won Male Amateur Golfer of the Year honours in 2021 & 2022.


Maggie Mac Neil has won her fifth gold medal in the pool at the Pan Am Games in Santiago, Chile. The 23-year-old from London, Ontario, swam the butterfly leg to help Canada win the women's 4 by100 metre medley relay on the final night of swimming competition. Her five golds are the most by a Canadian at a single Games. Canadian athletes have won 71 medals including 27 gold, 21 silver and 23 bronze.
