Steinbach Regional lost its 2023-24 Winnipeg High School Hockey League season opener Wednesday at the Keith Bodley Arena. The SRSS fell 4-3 to the Westwood Warriors. Jack Sparham scored the go-ahead goal for the Warriors with 6:55 left in the third period. Lucas Jolicoeur scored twice for the Sabres. Dominic Rooney had the other SRSS goal. Steinbach Regional will play its home opener next Wednesday against the River East Kodiaks at the T.G. Smith Arena. 


Team Manitoba dropped a 4-2 decision to Alberta on day one of the 2023 WHL Cup in Red Deer. Zach Lansard of Ste. Anne and Jaxon Jacobson of Brandon did the goal scoring for Team Manitoba who will face British Columbia today at 5:15 p.m.


Rylan Roersma had the Wheat Kings lone goal in Brandon's 11-1 loss to Portland. The Winterhawks scored four times in the first period and added five more in the middle frame. Kyle Chyzowski and Gabe Klassen each had a hat trick for Portland. The Wheat Kings have two wins and three losses on their seven-game road trip which continues Friday against the Everett Silvertips. 


The Winnipeg Jets meet the defending Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights tonight (7 p.m.) at Canada Life Centre. Winnipeg forward Gabe Vilardi is expected to miss four-to-six weeks with a medial collateral ligament sprain in his right knee. He suffered the injury in Tuesday's 5-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings. 


Golf Manitoba has announced the finalists for the 2023 Female and Male Amateur Golfer of the Year Awards. The Female Amateur Golf of the Year Finalists are Addison Kartusch, Cala Korman, Jeri Lafleche and Rhonda Orr. The Male finalists are Jay Doyle, Todd Fanning, Braxton Kuntz and Marco Trstenjak. The winners will be announced at the Golf Manitoba Awards Reception on Wednesday, October 25th at the Glendale Golf & Country Club in Winnipeg. 


Kerri Einarson, Jennifer Jones and Matt Dunstone have 1-1 records heading into day three of the Hearing Life Tour Challenge in Niagara Falls which is the first Grand Slam event of the season. Kaitlyn Lawes, Kate Cameron and Reid Carruthers are 0-2


Team Canada has secured a spot in the quarterfinals at the 2023 World Mixed Curling Championship at Aberdeen, Scotland. Skip Felix Asselin, vice-skip Laurie St-Georges, second Émile Asselin and lead Emily Riley of the Glenmore Curling Club in Montreal defeated Stefan Sever of Slovenia 7-5 and have a 7-0 record in Pool B. Team Canada will play its final round robin game today against Gabor Ezsol of Hungary.
