The Steinbach Regional Secondary School varsity volleyball teams will face the Dakota Lancers in the South Central Athletic Conference AAAA finals Friday night at the SRSS. The Sabres defeated the Glenlawn Lions 25-23, 25-12, 25-13 in the boys semifinal while the SRSS swept J.H. Bruns 25-10, 25-16, 25-15 in the girls semi. The Steinbach Regional junior varsity teams will play for SCAC championship banners tonight at College Jeanne-Sauve in Winnipeg. The SRSS boys will meet Glenlawn while the Sabres will take on the host Olympiens in the girls final. 


Cooper Penner assisted on goals by Mark Plett, Preston Perreault and Jude Plett as Steinbach Regional defeated the Miles Macdonell Buckeyes 5-3 at the T.G. Smith Centre. Cody Neufeld and Colton Wiebe also scored for the SRSS who improved to 5-2-2-1 in the Winnipeg High School Hockey League’s Platinum Promotions Division. The Sabres Invitational High School Hockey Tournament takes place this weekend. The four teams competing include Steinbach Regional, the Pembina Tigers, Fort Frances Muskies and St. Thomas Aquinas.


The Steinbach Huskies are still perfect. Brandon Thiessen, Seth Doerksen and Owen Wiebe scored two goals each as Steinbach downed the Springfield Xtreme 8-2. Ethan Plett and Ian Friesen also scored for first place Huskies who have started the 2022-23 Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League season with eight straight wins. Evan Veinot and Blake Gordichuk replied for the Xtreme. 


The Manitoba Junior Hockey League's Top Prospects Showcase wrapped up Wednesday at Stride Place in Portage. The Steinbach Pistons will play a pair of road games this weekend, Friday against the Swan Valley Stampeders and Saturday against the OCN Blizzard.
 

The Brandon Wheat Kings dropped a 6-1 decision to Medicine Hat. The Tigers were leading 3-1 after 40 minutes and then took control of the game early in the third period as Tomas Mrsic, Owen MacNeil and Dru Krebs scored before the four-minute mark of the final frame. Jake Chiasson had the lone goal for the Wheat Kings who are 0-3 on their five-game road trip which continues Friday against the Oil Kings in Edmonton.


The Winnipeg Jets begin a three-game homestand tonight when they face the Anaheim Ducks. Jets forward Mason Appleton suffered a wrist injury in Sunday's victory over the Seattle Kraken and will be out of the lineup for 8-12 weeks.


The CFL Player Awards will be handed out tonight in Regina and three Winnipeg Blue Bombers are West Division finalists. Quarterback Zach Collaros is in the running for Most Outstanding Player, receiver Dalton Shoen is up for the Top Rookie award and Stanley Bryant is a finalist for Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman. Winnipeg's Mike O'Shea is in the running for Coach of the Year honours. 


All four Manitoba teams have qualified for the championship pool at the Canadian Masters Curling Championships at the Pembina Curling Club in Winnipeg. Murray Warren has a 5-1 record, Mark Franklin is 3-3, Judy Colwell is 3-2 and Sandra Cowling is 2-3.

 

Steinbach will face the Swan Valley Stampeders and OCN Blizzard this weekend. Head coach Paul Dyck will join Clayton Dreger on the Pistons Report which airs Thursdays at 5:15 p.m. on AM 1250 Radio.
