Six Zone 13 teams will be competing at the Provincial A & AA High School Varsity Basketball Championships that begin today. The A championships are in Glenboro & Baldur. Ross L. Gray of Sprague boys face Wawanesa at 8:30 a.m. while Ross L. Gray girls will take on Hamiota at 3:45 p.m. The AA boys championship in is Russell. Gabrielle Roy will face the host Major Pratt Trojans at 10 a.m.; Lac du Bonnet will meet Frontier Collegiate at 2:45 p.m. and Green Valley will take on Carberry at 4:45 p.m. The AA girls championship is in Somerset. Gabrielle Roy will face Warren at 2:15 p.m. 


The Eastman Selects season came to an end Wednesday night in Niverville. Danica Averill stopped all 26 shots she faced as the Westman Wildcats shutout the Selects 2-0. Eastman netminder Addison Tomes made 24 saves. The Wildcats took the best-of-five semifinal three games to one and will meet the Winnipeg Ice in the Manitoba Female U18 AAA Hockey League final for the third year in a row. 


The Winnipeg Jets dropped a 4-2 decision to the Nashville Predators at Canada Life Centre. Juuse Saros made 28 saves in net for the Predators who are riding a 13-game point streak. Former Steinbach Pistons forward Cole Smith drew an assist on Kiefer Sherwood's ninth of the season at 14:32 of the first period which extended Nashville's lead to 2-0. Alex Iafallo and Mason Appleton scored for the Jets (41-19-5), who have lost three of their last five games. Winnipeg's Connor Hellebuyck made 34 saves.


Kristian Reichel had two goals and an assist and Thomas Milic stopped all 29 shots he faced as the Manitoba Moose blanked the Milwaukee Admirals 6-0, 


Kendall Coyne Schofield had a goal and an assist as Minnesota defeated Boston 4-0 on Wednesday at Xcel Energy Center. Nicole Hensley stopped all 20 shots in recording her first PWHL shutout. Minnesota moved into a tie for first place with Montreal and Toronto. 


The Provincial Mixed Curling Championship begins tonight at the Neepawa Curling Club. 10 teams are in the field of the triple knock-out event including former champions Corey Chambers, Sean Grassie and Braden Calvert. The winner will be the CurlManitoba representative at the 2024 National Championship to be played November 3rd - 9th in St. Catherines, Ontario.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes announced the acquisition and signing of right-handed pitcher Ryder Yakel. Yakel was obtained from the Frontier League’s New York Boulders in exchange for a player to be named later. The 26-year-old appeared in 23 games for the Boulders last season, posting a 1-0 record with a 3.60 earned run average and one save. A native of Garden City, Kansas, Yakel has compiled a 5-1 record with a 4.75 ERA in 63 appearances over three professional campaigns – all in the Frontier League.
