The Carillon Sultans suffered their first loss of the Manitoba Junior Baseball League playoffs Wednesday night. Ethan Minaker went the distance and scattered six hits and struck out six as the St. Boniface Legionaires defeated Carillon 4-1 at A.D. Penner Park in Steinbach. St. Boniface catcher Kaden Rozdeba drove in a pair of runs for the Legionaires who cut Carillon's lead in the best-of-five semifinal to two games to one. Mason Hartung had a pair of hits for the Sultans. Carillon's lone run was unearned. Michel Nadeau scored in the bottom of the first inning when Austin Friesen reached base on a two-out error by St. Boniface third baseman Kevin To. Game four goes tonight (7 p.m.) at Whittier Park. 

It's day one of Golf Manitoba's 2023 Provincial Men's Amateur Championship at Oak Island Golf. 117 competitors are in the field including two-time defending champion Braxton Kuntz of Breezy Bend along with Elijah Durksen & Jordan Hammond of the Steinbach Fly-In golf club, Adam Guenther & Troy Kehler of Elmhurst, Cole Peters of Niakwa and Tyson Ehnes of Lorette.

Week seven of the 2023 CFL season begins tonight as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers meet the Edmonton Elks at IG Field. The Blue Bombers are coming off a 31-28 overtime loss to the Redblacks in Ottawa last Saturday. Winnipeg has a 4-2 record while the Elks are 0-6. The Bombers have made four changes to the roster adding wide receiver Kenny Lawler, defensive back Jamal Parker, dime back Redha Kramdi and full back Damian Jackson. Off are wide receiver Carlton Agudosi, defensive back Jake Kelly, linebacker Malik Clements, and defensive end Celestin Haba. The opening kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.

The Winnipeg Jets have agreed to terms with forward Gabriel Vilardi on a two-year contract with an average annual value of $3,437,500. The 23-year-old Kingston, Ontario native played 63 games for the Los Angeles Kings in 2022-23 and recorded 41 points (23G, 18A) adding four points (2G, 2A) in five playoff games. Vilardi, L.A.’s first-round pick (11th overall) in the 2017 NHL Draft, was acquired by the Jets in a trade on June 26th.

Canada will play its Group Stage opener against Nigeria tonight (9:30 p.m.) at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Melbourne, Australia. The reigning Olympic champions, who are ranked number seven in the world, will also face co-host Australia and Ireland in group play.
