Beck Liden stopped 27 of the 28 shots he faced as the Steinbach Pistons wrapped up their four-game exhibition schedule with a 3-1 victory over the Niverville Nighthawks at the T.G. Smith Arena. Hunter Degelman, Noah Szabo and Connor Paronuzzi did the goal scoring for the Pistons who open the 2023-24 Manitoba Junior Hockey League season Friday, September 22nd against the Oil Capitals in Virden. Kyle Bochek had the lone goal for the Nighthawks. Niverville will play its season opener next Friday at home against Selkirk.


Dominik Petr scored twice and Andrei Maliavin had four helpers as the Brandon Wheat Kings downed the Warriors 4-1 in Moose Jaw. Evan Groening and Rylen Roersma also scored for Brandon. The Wheat Kings scored all four of their goals on the power play. Brandon netminder Ethan Eskit made 27 saves. The Wheat Kings went 4-0 in the pre-season and will play their 2023-24 Western Hockey League season opener Friday, September 22nd against the Regina Pats at Westoba Place.


The Winnipeg Jets prospects face the Vancouver Canucks today at the 2023 Young Stars Classic in Penticton. The Jets dropped a 3-1 decision to the Edmonton Oilers on Friday.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers fell 29-23 to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Tim Hortons Field. The Tiger-Cats scored on their first four possessions of the game. Winnipeg quarterback Zach Collaros threw touchdown passes to Nic Demski and Kenny Lawler but was also intercepted three times in the second half. The Blue Bombers, who haven’t won a regular season game in Hamilton since 2017, lead the CFL West Division with a 10-4 record. The B.C. Lions are in second spot at 9-4. The Bombers have the bye in week 17 and will host the East Division leading Toronto Argonauts on Friday, September 29th.
