The Steinbach Pistons handed the Winkler Flyers their first regulation loss of the season Saturday night at the HyLife Centre in La Broquerie. Noah Szabo’s power play goal with 17 seconds left lifted Steinbach past Winkler 4-3. Liam Doyle, Brandon Funk and Connor Paronuzzi also scored for the defending Manitoba Junior Hockey League champions. Paronuzzi’s sixth of the season at 17:02 of the third gave the Pistons a short lived 3-1 lead. Jayce Legaarden and James Richards scored 21 seconds apart for the Flyers and tied the game at 3-3.


The Steinbach Huskies, Landmark Blues and Springfield Xtreme were winners in the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League. Ian Friesen, Brandon Thiessen and Ethan Unger scored two goals each and Brandon Palmer made 22 saves as the defending champion Huskies defeated the Lorette Comets 9-0. Riley Plett stopped 43 shots as the Blues downed the Macdonald Swarm 4-2. Braeden Rebeck had two goals and an assist as the Xtreme beat the St. Clements Gators 6-1.


Zachary Maynard had a goal and an assist in the St. Malo Warriors 5-3 victory over the Lundar Falcons. Sam Freynet, Rylan Keck, Jeremie Collette and Damon Johnson also scored for the Warriors.


Kali Remillard scored the Selects lone goal in Eastman’s 3-1 loss to the Interlake Lightning. Selects netminder Orienna Kennedy made 21 saves.


The defending champion Ste. Anne Aces and Red River Wild were winners in the SEMHL Saturday night. Matt Bailey scored twice as Ste. Anne beat Ile des Chenes 7-2. Yvan Pattyn, Brett Meilleur, Jordan DePape, Brenden Walker and Braden Purtill also scored for the Aces. Justin Dumontier and Justin Tremblay did the goal scoring for the Northstars. Wyatt Sabourin had two goals and an assist as Red River defeated Carman 6-3. Brett Armstrong, Jared Magne, Gavin Froese and Jonah Wasylak also scored for the Wild. Tristan Day, Brock Schwaluk and AJ Nychuk replied for the Beavers.


Carson Bjarnason made 28 saves and Roger McQueen scored his 10th goal of the season in the Brandon Wheat Kings 2-1 victory over the Saskatoon Blades at Westoba Place. Quinn Mantei also scored for the Wheat Kings.


The Winnipeg Jets three-game win streak came to an end Saturday night in Montreal. Nick Suzuki scored the only goal of the shootout and Jake Allen made 42 saves as the Canadiens defeated Winnipeg 4-3. Adam Lowry scored twice for the Jets. His first came on a penalty shot 4:28 into the opening period. Nino Niedereitter also scored for Winnipeg. Laurent Brossoit stopped 26 shots.


Ashton Sautner scored his second goal of the game with 46 seconds left in overtime to lift the Manitoba Moose past the Texas Stars 6-5. Brad Lambert, Danny Zhilkin, Jeff Malott and Axel Jonsson-Fjallby also scored for the Moose. Nikita Chibrikov chipped in with three assists.


Canadian boxers Tammara Thibeault and Wyatt Sanford captured gold medals at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile. Canadian athletes have won 87 medals including 32 gold, 25 silver and 30 bronze.
