The Carillon Sultans won twice on the 2024 Manitoba Junior Baseball League’s Opening Day Showcase at Optimist Park in Winnipeg. The Sultans defeated the Pembina Valley Orioles 4-1 and the Altona Bisons 12-0. Carillon’s next game is Thursday against the St. James A’s at A.D. Penner Park in Steinbach.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 0-3 to start the 2024 American Association season. The Fish gave up two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning and fell 5-4 to Cleburne. Max Murphy homered for the Goldeyes who plated three runs in the top of the ninth and took a 4-3 lead.


The Manitoba Junior Hockey League champion Winkler Flyers lost 6-5 in a shootout to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League champion Melfort Mustangs at the 2024 Centennial Cup in Oakville, Ontario. Jakob Jones, Brody Beauchemin, Connor Jensen, Dalton Andrew and Zach Nicolas scored for the Flyers. Winkler found the back of the net three times with the man advantage but took nine penalties and saw Melfort score three times on the power play. The Mustangs lead Group A with six points. The Flyers have four points and will face the host Oakville Blades Monday night.


Jagger Firkus had a three-point night with two goals and an assist and Jackson Unger made 38 saves as the Moose Jaw Warriors defeated the Portland Winterhawks 5-1. Atley Calvert, Pavel McKenzie and Brayden Yager also scored for the visiting Warriors who lead the Western Hockey League’s best-of-seven final two games to none. Nate Danielson had the lone goal for the Winterhawks. Game three goes Tuesday night in Moose Jaw.


Connor Bedard scored twice as Canada won its preliminary round opener 4-2 over Great Britain at the 2024 World Men’s Hockey Championship in Prague. Canada’s next game is Sunday (9:20 a.m.) against Denmark.


Boston is one win away from advancing to the Professional Women’s Hockey League final. Taylor Wenczkowski scored at 11:44 of the third overtime to lift Boston past Montreal 2-1. Boston leads the best-of-five semifinal two games to none.


Winnipeg Blue Bombers main camp begins today. The Bombers signed American defensive tackle Jabari Ellis. The South Carolina native appeared in 35 Division 1 games, starting 22 of them, recording 81 tackles and three sacks. Ellis appeared in two games with the Montreal Alouettes in 2022 and had one tackle in each game.
