Jordon McDonald of Deer Lodge and Zoey Terrick of the Heather captured the 2023 Provincial Junior Curling Championships Saturday at the Portage Curling Club. McDonald, Reece Hamm, Elias Huminicki and Cameron Olafson defeated Provincial U18 champion Jace Freeman of Virden 8-7 in the junior men’s final. Terrick along with Jaycee Terrick, Jensen Letham and Tessa Terrick shaded Grace Beaudry of St Vital 9-8 in the junior women’s final. McDonald, Freeman, Terrick and Beaudry will compete at the Canadian Junior Championships which will be held March 25th-April 2nd in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec.


The Springfield Xtreme and Lorette Comets were winners in the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League Saturday night. Michael Jette scored the tying goal with 59 seconds left in the second period and then potted the go-ahead goal with 6:41 remaining as Springfield edged Niverville 3-2. Evan Veinot also scored for the Xtreme. Deklan Wiebe and Jaxsen Friesen replied for the Clippers. Calum Tremblay scored his second goal of the night in overtime to lift Lorette past Red River 4-3. Reece Halverson and Devon Weir also scored for the defending champion Comets. Bryson Loewen had a pair of goals for the Mudbugs who are tied with Springfield for second place in the HTJHL. Both teams have 28 points. The Xtreme have four games left and Red River has three. Lorette and Niverville are tied for fourth place with 16 points each.


The Beausejour Comets scored four goals in the first period and four more in the third en route to an 8-2 victory over the Lundar Falcons. Aidan Ticknor and Riley Tirschman each had a hat trick for the Comets.


The Eastman Selects outshot Parkland 49-29 but lost 7-3 to the Rangers in Dauphin. Jeremiah Warkentine, Mason Hopper and Easton Gaffray did the goal scoring for the Selects who trailed 2-0 and 4-2 at the period breaks.


The Eastman Selects gave up three third period goals and dropped a 4-2 decision to the Winnipeg Ice. Ginger Fast and Kaylee Iwin scored for the Selects who lost for the first time in 2023. Eastman started the New Year with four straight wins.


The Brandon Wheat Kings and Winnipeg Ice both played extra time Saturday night. Kalan Lind scored 39 seconds into overtime to lift the Red Deer Rebels past Brandon 2-1. Nolan Ritchie had the lone goal in regulation for the Wheat Kings who wrap up their three-game Alberta road trip today against the Edmonton Oil Kings. Matthew Savoie scored the only goal of the shootout as Winnipeg edged the Moose Jaw Warriors 3-2. Owen Pederson and Zach Benson with his 25th of the season scored in regulation for the Ice.


Connor Hellebuyck made 25 saves and Mark Scheifele had two goals and an assist as Winnipeg defeated the Ottawa Senators 5-1. Blake Wheeler recorded a goal and two helpers and reached 900 career points. Nikolaj Ehlers and Cole Perfetti also scored for the Jets who are 1-2 on their five-game road trip that continues today against the Philadelphia Flyers.


Declan Chisholm scored in overtime to lift Manitoba past the Texas Stars 5-4 at Canada Life Centre. Tyler Boland had a pair of goals in regulation and Alex Limoges added a goal and three assists for the Moose.
