The Steinbach Pistons are still perfect in February. Cole Plowman made 26 saves as the defending Manitoba Junior Hockey League champions downed the Selkirk Steelers 4-1 Saturday night at the HyLife Centre in La Broquerie. Connor Paronuzzi, Kirk Mullen, Samuel Noad and James Fuchs did the goal scoring for the Pistons who won their fifth in a row.


The Springfield Xtreme, Lorette Comets and Red River Mudbugs were winners in the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League playoffs. Sam Sass had a goal and an assist as Springfield downed the Landmark Blues 4-2 in game one of their best-of-five quarterfinal. Jack Seniuk made 42 saves as Lorette defeated the Macdonald Swarm 4-2. The Comets lead that series two games to none. Andy Boger, Cole Martens and Andrew Dyck did the goal scoring as the Mudbugs beat Niverville 3-1 and evened that series at a game a piece. Teo Lambert had the lone goal for the Clippers.


Job Peters had two goals and an assist as the Eastman Selects shaded the Yellowhead Chiefs 5-4 at the SunGro Centre in Beausejour. Luc De Gagne, Jeremiah Warkentine and Finley Titterson also scored for the Selects who trail the Norman Northstars by three points in the race for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League. Both teams have six games left.


Danyel Heppner scored twice and Addison Tomes made 25 saves as Eastman defeated the Pembina Valley Hawks 4-2 in Niverville. Isabella Carriere and Sophia Heidinger had the other Selects goals.


The Ste. Anne Aces and Warren Mercs were winners on the opening night of the SEMHL playoffs. Jordan DePape had two goals and an assist as the defending champion Aces downed the Ile des Chenes Northstars 5-1 and Brock Couch scored 44 seconds into overtime to lift the Mercs past the Notre Dame Hawks 5-4. Those were the first games in their respective best-of-five quarterfinals.


The Brandon Wheat Kings gave up three goals in the first period and three more in the third and lost 7-3 to the Raiders in Prince Albert. Nolan Flamand, Brett Hyland and Dominik Petr scored for the Wheat Kings who were outshot 45-24 by the Raiders.


The Winnipeg Jets season high five-game losing skid came to an end Saturday night at Canada Life Centre. Connor Hellebuyck made 35 saves as Winnipeg shaded the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1. Mark Scheifele and Nino Niederreiter did the goal scoring for the Jets.


Kristian Reichel scored the only goal of the shootout as the Manitoba Moose edged the Grand Rapids Griffins 4-3. Brad Lambert, Jeffrey Viel and Ville Heinola scored in regulation for the visiting Moose.


Kelia Haskins & Jeremy vanDriel of Edward Schreyer School in Beausejour lost out in the semifinals of the Provincial Mixed Doubles High School Curling Championship at the Pembina Curling Club in Winnipeg. Haskins & vanDriel fell 5-2 to Shyla Johnson & Max Barrett of Garden City who won the championship banner. Tia Plaetinck & Thomas Woloskoski of Whitemouth finished with a 2-3 round robin record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Meghan Lagadi of St. Mary’s and Evan Boutet of College Beliveau captured the four-person championship banners.


Shaela Hayward, Keira Krahn, India Young and Rylie Cox are 2024 Canadian U18 curling champions. The Carman Curling Club foursome defeated Jolianne Fortin of Quebec 8-5 in Saturday’s gold medal game in Ottawa.
