The Winnipeg Jets announced Friday that Scott Arniel has been appointed as the ninth head coach in franchise history and the fourth since the club’s relocation to Winnipeg. Arniel, 61, spent the past two seasons as associate coach for Winnipeg and helped guide the team to a 98-57-9 record and a pair of appearances in the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Kingston, Ont. native served as interim head coach for the Jets during a trio of absences by former head coach Rick Bowness due to family and health reasons. Arniel posted a 15-7-3 record in that interim role over those 25 games in 2022-23 and 2023-24.


Canada will face Switzerland today (1:20 p.m.) in the semifinals at the 2024 World Men’s Hockey Championship in Prague. Canada downed Slovakia 6-3 and Switzerland beat Germany 3-1 in the quarterfinals.


Minnesota is one win away from capturing the Walter Cup. Taylor Heise had a goal and an assist and Nicole Hensley made 18 saves as Minnesota defeated Boston 4-1. Minnesota leads the PWHL’s best-of-five final two games to one and will host game four on Sunday.


The host Saginaw Spirit held on for a 5-4 victory over the Moose Jaw Warriors on day one of the 2024 Memorial Cup Friday night in Michigan. Nic Sima, Owen Beck, Zayne Parekh, Jorian Donovan and Josh Bloom did the goal scoring for the host Spirit who led 4-0 nine minutes into the second period. Brayden Yager had a pair of goals for the Western Hockey League champions. Matthew Savoie and Dominion City’s Denton Mateychuk also scored for the Warriors.


Golf Manitoba’s Match Play qualifier scheduled for today at the Winkler Centennial golf course has been rescheduled to Sunday as nearly four inches of rain fell on the golf course on Friday.
