Ty Brewster of Quarry Oaks is in a tie for fourth place heading into round two of the Provincial Junior Boys Golf Championship. Brewster was two-over par 74 Wednesday at the Niakwa Country Club in Winnipeg and trails first round leader Zostrianos Gross of Shilo by five shots. Gross opened with a three-under par 69. Matthew Penner of Quarry Oaks was 89 in round one and Zach Romaniuk of La Broquerie Golf was 90. Addison Kartusch of St. Charles, who won the Provincial Women's Amateur Championship this past Sunday at Minnedosa, was two-under par 70 and leads the Provincial Junior Girls Championship by five shots over Jeri Lafleche of Niakwa. 


The Manitoba Junior Baseball League's regular season schedule is over. The Carillon Sultans defeated the Pembina Valley Orioles 8-3 Wednesday night at A.D, Penner Park in Steinbach. The Sultans (19-5) will face the Altona Bisons (3-21) in the quarterfinals. The three other playoff series feature the Orioles (11-13) against the St. James A's (16-8); the Elmwood Giants (18-6) will take on the Winnipeg South Wolves (4-20) and the Interlake Blue Jays (16-8) will meet the defending champion St. Boniface Legionaires (9-15). 


The Carillon Sultans plated 11 runs in the fifth inning and defeated the Pembina Phillies 19-2 Wednesday night in Niverville. Carillon's Nate Christiuk and Austin Friesen scored three times and drove in four runs each while Zach Giesbrecht homered and had four rbi. Tyler Friesen went three-for-four at the plate for the Sultans who improved to 5-6 in the Winnipeg Senior Baseball League and will meet the North Winnipeg Pirates tonight at the Vince Leah Ball Park. 


Softball Manitoba's Provincial U17 AAA Championship begins today in Friedensfeld. The Eastman Wildcats will meet the Manitoba Angels and Winnipeg Lightning on day one. The Wildcats will face Smitty's Terminators and the Manitoba Thunder on Friday and wrap up the round robin against the Westman Magic and Central Energy on Saturday. The four teams advance to the playoffs on Sunday. 


Ramon Bramasco had two hits and scored a pair of runs and Rob Emery drilled his 8th home run of the season in the Winnipeg Goldeyes 5-4 victory over the defending American Association champion Kansas City Monarchs at Blue Cross Park. Goldeyes started Joey Matulovich and reliever Nick Trogrlic-Iverson combined on a four-hitter. 


Canada will face Uruguay in Copa America's third place game Saturday in Charlotte, North Carolina. Columbia defeated Uruguay 1-0 in the semifinals and will meet Argentina in the championship game Sunday in Miami Gardens, Florida.


Canada's men's basketball team lost 86-72 to the United States in a pre-Olympic tune-up Wednesday night in Las Vegas. RJ Barrett poured in 12 points while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Dillon Brooks each had 10 for the Canadians who led 11-1 midway through the first quarter.
