The Steinbach Huskies, Landmark Blues and Red River Mudbugs were winners in the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League Saturday night. Steinbach scored four times in the second period and added four more in the third en route to a 10-2 victory over the Springfield Xtreme in Oakbank. Ethan Unger had a goal and three assists for the Huskies who improved to 5-0 on the season. Jackson Reimer had two goals and two assists as the hometown Blues defeated the Macdonald Swarm 5-3. William Sawatzky scored twice in the third period and Lucas Dyck had a goal and two helpers as the Mudbugs downed the Clippers 5-2 in Niverville.


The Niverville Nighthawks dropped a 3-1 decision to the OCN Blizzard at the Gordon Lathlin Memorial Arena. Carter Spirig scored 3:17 into the first period to give the Nighthawks an early 1-0 lead but Blizzard netminder Chase Hamm shut the door the rest of the way. Niverville’s Ethan Kadatz made 32 saves.


The Eastman Selects gave up three goals in the second period and three more in the third and lost 6-2 to the Interlake Lightning at the Sun Gro Centre in Beausejour. Mason Hooper and Ryder McLure scored for the Selects who have lost three straight and face the defending Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League champion Winnipeg Wild this afternoon at Bell MTS Iceplex.


Ava Boily and Kali Remillard did the goal scoring for the Eastman Selects in their 4-2 loss to the Pembina Valley Hawks Saturday afternoon in Niverville. Selects netminder Orieanna Kennedy faced 37 shots.


The Ile des Chenes Northstars, Morden Bombers and Portage Islanders were winners in the SEMHL Saturday night. Matthew Osadick scored twice as the Northstars downed the Red River Wild 6-3. Andrew Clark had a goal and an assist and Reed Peters made 48 saves as the Bombers won their season opener 3-2 over the Notre Dame Hawks and Jens Meilleur had two goals and two assists and Steve Christie stopped all 21 shots he faced as the Islanders blanked the Altona Maroons 6-0.


The Brandon Wheat Kings fell 4-1 to the Saskatoon Blades. Andrei Malyavin had the lone goal for the Wheat Kings who have lost six in a row. Connor Dale scored twice as the Winnipeg Ice held on for a 5-4 victory over the Tri-City Americans.


Connor Hellebuyck made 30 saves for his 30th career shutout as the Winnipeg Jets defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 4-0 at Canada Life Centre. Josh Morrissey, Pierre-Luc Dubois and Nate Schmidt scored power play goals for Winnipeg while Adam Lowry scored this third of the season shorthanded. The Jets (7-3-1) wrap up their three-game homestand Tuesday against the Dallas Stars.


Brad Gushue will play for gold and Kerri Einarson will play for bronze at the Pan Continental Curling Championships in Calgary. Gushue defeated Riku Yanagisawa of Japan 8-2 and will meet Byeongjin Jeong of South Korea in the men’s final. Einarson gave up three in the ninth and a steal of one in the tenth end and lost 6-5 to Satsuki Fujisawa of Japan in the women’s semifinal. Einarson, Val Sweeting, Shannon Birchard and Briane Harris will face Tabitha Peterson of the United States in the bronze medal game.
