The Lorette Comets and Red River Mudbugs were winners in the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League Sunday night. Devon Weir scored twice as the defending champion Comets beat Landmark 4-2. Calum Tremblay and Tyler Van de Velde also scored for Lorette. Noah Keating and Felix Asselin replied for the Blues. Andrew Dyck scored twice and Braden Hildebrand had four assists as Red River defeated Macdonald 9-5. Dillon Thiessen, Dawson Friesen, Bryson Loewen, Ethan Franz, Jonah Neufeld and Lucas Dyck also scored for the Mudbugs. Ellie Scharf, Griffin Campbell, Adam Bossuyt, Talon Weselak and Zach Borsboom did the goal scoring for the Swarm.


The Niverville Nighthawks gave up three goals in a  three-and-a-half minute span late in the second period and fell 5-2 to the Flyers in Winkler. Hayden Wheddon and Ethan Kelly scored for the Nighthawks who have lost four of their last five games. 


The United States defeated Canada East 5-2 in the gold medal game at the 2022 World Junior A Hockey Challenge in Cornwall, Ontario. Garrett Schifsky had a pair of goals for the Americans who won the tournament for the ninth time. Matheson Mason and Matthew Cato did the goal scoring for Canada East. Canada West lost 3-2 in a shootout to Sweden in the bronze medal game. Ty Paisley of the Steinbach Pistons was on Team West's roster. 


The Eastman Selects gave up four second period goals and lost 6-2 to the defending Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League champion Winnipeg Wild. Colton Pakoo and Easton Gaffray scored power play goals for the Selects. 


The Eastman Selects were shutout 6-0 by the defending Manitoba Female U18 AAA Hockey League champion Westman Wildcats. Selects goaltender Bailey Grunewald faced 32 shots. 


The Portage Islanders are still perfect. Jens Meilleur scored the go-ahead goal on the power play 146 into the third period as Portage defeated the defending SEMHL champion Warren Mercs 3-1 at Stride Place. Channing Bresciani and Riley Hay also scored for the Islanders who improved to 8-0 on the season. Kyle Lundale had the lone goal for the Mercs. 


The Winnipeg Jets dropped a 3-2 decision to Seattle. Ryan Donato scored the tying goal 16 seconds into the third period for the Kraken and Jared McCann potted the go-ahead goal with 4:32 remaining in regulation. Mark Scheifele and Pierre-Luc Dubois replied for the Jets. 


Jeff Malott scored 2:06 into overtime to lift the Manitoba Moose past the Belleville Senators 3-2 at Canada Life Centre. Ashton Sautner and Simon Lundmark had the Moose goals in regulation. 

 

The Eastman Selects defeated the Interlake Lightning and lost twice to the Winnipeg Wild this past week. Head coach Dwight Hirst will join Clayton Dreger on the Selects Report which airs Mondays at 5:15 p.m. on AM 1250 Radio.
