Brad Lambert scored the tying goal with 3:29 left in the third period and Nate Schmidt potted the winner with 18 seconds remaining as the Winnipeg Jets edged the Montreal Canadiens 4-3. Evan Polei and Cole Maier also scored for the Jets who play their fourth of six exhibition games Saturday at home against the Edmonton Oilers.


Gavin Gunderson had three goals and an assist as the Niverville Nighthawks defeated the Steelers 5-2 in Selkirk. Brett Tataryn and Brendan Bottem also scored for the Nighthawks who received a 36-save performance from Ethan Kadatz.


The Steinbach Regional football teams played their homecoming games Thursday at A.D. Penner Park. The SRSS varsity team lost 16-0 to the Grant Park Pirates. Mason Funk had eight tackles for the Sabres while Dom Barkanyi had two interceptions. The SRSS JV team fell 34-18 to Grant Park. Josiah Grenier caught two touchdown passes for the Sabres.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers face the Saskatchewan Roughriders tonight (7 p.m.) at IG Field. The 12-2 Bombers will clinch a home playoff game with a win over the Riders. Winnipeg receiver Dalton Schoen needs 11 yards to become the seventh rookie in franchise history to reach 1,000 yards receiving.


The Toronto Blue Jays clinched a playoff spot Thursday when the Baltimore Orioles lost 5-3 to the Boston Red Sox. The Jays, who have six games left, are one-and-a-half games ahead of the Seattle Mariners and two games up on the Tampa Bay Rays in the race for the first American League wildcard spot.
