The defending champion Steinbach Pistons open the 2023-24 Manitoba Junior Hockey League season tonight against the Virden Oil Capitals at Tundra Oil & Gas Place. The Pistons captured their third Turnbull Cup in franchise history last spring when they knocked off the Oil Capitals in five games in the MJHL final.


The Brandon Wheat Kings raise the curtain on the 2023-24 Western Hockey League season when they meet the Regina Pats at Westoba Place. The Wheat Kings went 4-0 in the pre-season including a pair of wins over the Pats.


It’s day two of Winnipeg Jets training camp. Team Selanne practice is at 10 a.m. at Hockey for All Centre. Team Numminen will hit the ice at 1 p.m. The Jets have signed forward Colby Barlow to a three-year, entry-level contract worth $1.2 million per season. The 18-year-old Orillia, Ontario native was Winnipeg’s first round pick (18th overall) in the 2023 NHL draft. Barlow had 46 goals and 79 points in 59 games with Owen Sound of the Ontario Hockey League last season. He is expected to return to the Attack for at least one more year.


Kody Fawcett & Dave Michaleski of Selkirk won Golf Manitoba's Men's Four-Ball Championship Thursday at the Bridges golf course near Starbuck. Fawcett & Michaleski edged Thomas Friesen & Evan Nachtigall of Wheat City on a countback. Both teams were seven-under par 65. Chris Warrack & Jody Fenton and Matt Fatouros & Ryan McLean of Quarry Oaks finished in a tie for 25th place at two-over par 74. Elijah Durksen & Ted Froese of the Steinbach Fly-In golf club were 80.
