Steinbach Regional finished the round robin with a win and a loss at the Provincial High School Baseball Championship Thursday in Glenboro. The Sabres defeated the Swan Valley Tigers 18-1 and lost 19-3 to the Garden Valley Zodiacs. La Broquerie’s Ecole St. Joachim Braves dropped a 10-6 decision to the Boissevain Broncos. The Braves play their final round robin game today against the William Morton Warriors of Gladstone in Baldur. 


Steinbach Regional will play round robin games today against the Vincent Massey Trojans of Winnipeg and the Virden Bears at the Provincial High School Fastpitch Championship in Ile des Chenes. The top team in each of the four Pools advances to the quarterfinals. The 8 second and third place teams play in the first round of the playoffs. 


The Provincial AAAA High School Soccer Championships begin today in Steinbach. The SRSS boys will meet West Kildonan in the quarterfinals while the SRSS girls face the Vincent Massey Trojans of Winnipeg. 


Josh Epp had three singles and a double and Carson Epp had three hits and drove in four runs as the Carillon Sultans downed the Springfield Braves 14-3 Thursday night at A.D. Penner Park in Steinbach. Noah Vogt and Tyler Plett combined on a three-hitter. The Sultans, who have a 4-1 record in the Winnipeg Senior Baseball League, play their next game Tuesday against the West Winnipeg A's in Steinbach. The A's beat Carillon 13-4 last Thursday at Charleswood Park.


Doug Penner of the Steinbach Fly-In golf club will face Lyle McKenzie of Niakwa today in the round of 16 at Golf Manitoba’s Provincial Men's Match Play Championship at the Glendale Golf & Country Club in Winnipeg. Penner shaded Troy Kehler of Elmhurst 1-up Thursday. Les Forbes of Quarry Oaks and Dan Lamy of La Broquerie Golf lost their opening matches in the senior men's division. Forbes fell 3 & 2 to Karl Schroeder of Rossmere while Lamy lost 7 & 6 to Garth Collings of Breezy Bend. Kate Gregoire of Quarry Oaks will play Saturday in the women's quarterfinals. 


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers play their final preseason game tonight (7:30 p.m.) against the Saskatchewan Roughriders at IG Field. Only 10 projected starters will be on the roster. Quarterback Zach Collaros, receivers Dalton Schoen, Nic Demski & Kenny Lawler; offensive linemen Jermarcus Hardrick, Stanley Bryant and Pat Neufeld; defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat and linebacker Adam Bighill will all sit out tonight's game against the Riders. Dru Brown and with rookies Tyrrell Pigrome and Josh Jones will share the quarterbacking duties. 


The Winnipeg Goldeyes gave up four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and lost 9-4 to the Chicago Dogs. Max Murphy had a three-run homer for the Fish and Winnipeg designated hitter Dayson Croes doubled off the centre field wall on the first pitch of the evening and extended his hitting streak to 15 games.
