Even though the school year only begins next week, the reduced speed limits are now in effect within school zones.

RCMP Community Constable Dennis Redikop says there will soon be a lot of young pedestrians to watch out for, and motorists should now be prepared to slow down and help keep the children safe as they walk or ride bicycles to and from school.

He says drivers should always pay attention to their surroundings, and now, to watch for signs in school zones that indicate when the lower speed limit is in place.

In Steinbach, the school zones have speed limits of 30 km/h from September 1st to June 30th, Monday to Friday between 8am and 5pm.

Redikop says it is also important for adults to teach children how they can safely cross the street, using crosswalks and paying attention to traffic.

“Sometimes motorists do not pay attention and we see that a lot,” he says. “Our biggest thing is to make sure that everyone gets to their place safely.”

Back to school time means school zones are coming into effect. Take note of those areas and slow down!
