Loewen in Steinbach has confirmed that 30 part-time production staff have been given 16-week temporary layoff notices.

In a news release, the company says, while it has seen increased orders this year, there are still volume fluctuations in various departments that affect the number of staff that are required. It also says those on temporary lay off may be called back as soon as production requirements change.

To put some perspective on the 30 layoffs, Loewen notes it has hired 225 employees in the past year. The company adds that adjustments in production staffing levels are not new and have long been a standard in the building industry.
