RCMP report they nabbed 50 impaired drivers over the May long weekend as they stepped up enforcement for Canada Road Safety Week. That's down from 72 last year.

Police also issued 87 tickets for failure to wear seatbelts and 13 for using a cell phone while driving. 589 motorists received tickets for speeding or aggressive driving. There was one fatality during the long weekend.

RCMP also say the most egregious speeding ticket was issued to a 19 year-old male on Highway #1 near Portage la Prairie who was caught doing 182 kilometres per hour in a 100 zone. They note the penalty for that offence could be up to a three month driving suspension and an $1,100.00 fine.
