The Ward 4 Councillor for the Rural Municipality of Hanover is calling it "super cool." Dylan Barkman is referring to the fact they raised enough money locally to now go through with repaving Pansy Road.

In late February, Hanover council agreed to go ahead with repaving six miles of Pansy Road, under one condition. The condition was that of the $580,000 expected cost, $115,000 needed to be raised from private donations.

On February 28th, Barkman told Steinbachonline.com that the money would be in place by the end of April. Following a successful spaghetti fundraiser April 14th, Barkman announced they were only about $20,000 short of their goal. Then, on Thursday of this last week, Barkman says they reached their target.

"I don't know that it's a shock to me," admits Barkman. "It's an incredibly good feeling because the bar was set really high and what we saw happen again evidenced here is that there is a spirit of community in Pansy and I think that's really important to note."

Barkman says a total of 53 different donors gave to this project. They ranged from as high as $20,000 by a couple of farms, all the way down to just a couple of coins by a young child.

"There was this one little girl who came and gave me eleven cents out of her own piggy bank, just because she'd recognized the value of the project too," recalls Barkman. "So that's pretty cool."

Barkman says thanks to private donations, they can now pave the entire six miles from Provincial Road 205 south to Pansy. He expects the work to begin in June.
