Former Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister is stepping down as a Member of the Legislative Assembly.

Pallister informed the Speaker today of his intent to resign his seat, effective immediately.

On August 10th, Pallister announced that he would not be seeking re-election. Less than one month later, Steinbach MLA Kelvin Goertzen was named interim Premier until a new leader and Premier is elected on October 30th.

the PC party because I believed I could lead a team that would fix the finances, repair the services, and rebuild the economy of Manitoba.

We earned two record back-to-back majority governments because Manitobans knew we would keep our word. As government, we created the largest ongoing per person investment in healthcare, education and family services of any province to protect the vulnerable. We lowered the tax burden on working Manitobans, seniors and families to help make life more affordable, and we did this while moving away from dangerous deficits and debt to balance.

With the preparations our government has put in place over the years and throughout the pandemic to protect Manitobans, our province is poised to recover strongly and safely.

As the second longest serving leader of the PC Party over the past half century, I am proud of our record encouraging more women to become involved in public life, creating safer working environments for all public and private sector employees, and establishing a more sustainable environmental and fiscal reality for our province.

I leave my seat in the Legislative Assembly excited to see Manitoba on the eve of having our first woman as Premier. I am confident that they will continue to represent the principles and values of our party, and seize the opportunities to lead our province in post pandemic recovery.

Again, I am incredibly optimistic about our future as a province and that is why I believe the only thing better than today in Manitoba, is tomorrow in Manitoba.

There is no word on a by-election for the Fort Whyte seat.
