The Fire Chief for Tache says not one pig perished in a barn fire early this morning.

Allan Rau says their crews were called to Colony Road, southeast of Ile des Chenes at 5:42 am. They arrived to find smoke coming from the building.

Crews made entry and located the fire inside the domestic area of the barn, in a shower room. They were able to extinguish the blaze before it spread to the part of the barn containing the animals.

Rau says they were told that the barn held approximately 4,500 pigs. None of those pigs were harmed and Rau says the barn is back in operation.

However, there was considerable damage. Rau is estimating at least $100,000 in damages, mostly the result of smoke.

As for the cause, Rau says the Office of the Fire Commissioner is currently on scene investigating.

According to Rau, a worker noticed the smoke after stepping out of the shower shortly after 5 am. That is when the call was made to 911.

He notes there were no injuries.

"No injuries, none to the workers or firefighters, everybody's good," notes Rau. "A little frozen, but good."

He adds the crew did a great job.

"I'm glad that we were able to contain it to the domestic area and the farm operations can continue," says Rau.
