A development planned just off of Kokomo Road South in La Broquerie has proven to be more divisive than expected.

A few community members expressed concerns about the development in the La Broquerie Council Chambers. The developer intends on building a 12 lot subdivision 1 mile away from Highway 52. The small neighborhood will have brand new access points stemming from Kokomo Road and St. Joseph Road, forming a right angle around the community. Initial plans also include a 6-acre community park.

During a conditional use public hearing at Council’s most recent meeting, some ratepayers expressed concerns over these plans. Two residents showed up to formally oppose the subdivision, bringing with them a petition of several more signatures. Because the nearby streets are already a known hotbed of speeding and ATV activity, the objectors were worried more dwelling units would make both problems worse.

While Council recognized the validity of the concerns, they indicated they had already ordered reduced speed limit signs for the region and said they would consider putting up “no ATV” signs as well.

Reeve Lewis Weiss adds that all new developments are required to put in walking paths to mitigate the pedestrian safety hazard.

“Whenever we do a development like this, trails have to be put alongside the roads so people don’t have to walk along the roadway.”

Ultimately, Weiss feels the plan is good and will benefit his municipality.

“We’re hoping an idea like this would bring people together sooner than it would tear them apart,” he says.

Council voted unanimously in favor of the development.
