A new garbage truck is costing more than what the City of Steinbach had anticipated.

Council had $320,000 in the budget for the replacement vehicle and had to dip into a reserve fund to make the purchase.

Councillor Damian Penner made the motion at a recent meeting to award the tender to Shu-Pak Equipment Inc. at a cost of $362,730.

“It is a little bit over the budgeted price of $320,000 so we will be transferring from the city's environmental reserve fund just this once,” he said. “All things considered with how everything has been going up in price, that little bit extra is not unheard of in this day and age for purchasing large pieces of equipment.”

Council heard that the new truck can easily be outfitted with necessary equipment for automated collection when the time comes to move in that direction.

This new garbage truck will replace one of the older ones.
