A large portion of Steinbach was without power late Thursday morning.

Riley McDonald with Manitoba Hydro says 995 customers lost power at 11:27 am. Most customers were within the triangle that is bordered by Main Street, Loewen Boulevard and Hespeler Street.

McDonald says power was restored at 12:12 pm.

"Our crews removed a tree that fell across a line," reports McDonald.

McDonald adds there have been several outages in the province Thursday caused by trees and he says it could be connected to the high winds and rain.

"If you see anything sparking, burning, downed lines make sure you call 911 and stay at least 10 metres away," urges McDonald. "And slow down if you see us on the highways and be safe out there."

Meanwhile, McDonald says tree-related outages are a good reminder for why it is important to keep them trimmed. He notes if you see any trees near a line, you are encouraged to contact Manitoba Hydro or report the problem online. McDonald says their website distinguishes the difference between what is the responsibility of Manitoba Hydro and what is the responsibility of a homeowner.

"Any time power goes out because of a tree it's another reminder that it's a good idea to make sure that the vegetation around electrical equipment is the appropriate stuff and that it's trimmed out of the way," says McDonald.
