The quick snap of a picture has helped Environment Canada confirm a landspout tornado occurred Tuesday around 5:45 PM about six kilometers southeast of Letellier.

Josh Penner captured the shot which showed a rotating column of dirt and dust in one of his fields. Based on the image, Environment Canada has given a preliminary rating of EF0, the weakest rating on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. An EF0 rating places winds within the twister at 105 to 137 km/h.

Landspout tornadoes are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms, and do not usually cause significant damage. They can, however, be strong enough to topple trees, damage roofs or toss debris a short distance. In this case, though, no damage was reported.

Right now, weather in most of southeastern Manitoba is expected to remain largely stable, though some showers are anticipated heading into Thursday. The forecast also indicates a risk of thunderstorms in and around Steinbach on Thursday.
