The province can expect some pressure to improve safety along Highway 52 between Steinbach and La Broquerie.

The R.M. of La Broquerie is writing a letter to the Manitoba Government regarding traffic volumes and safety concerns along Highway 52 between the two communities.

Reeve Lewis Weiss says his council is making a case to twin that section of the 52, and for paving highways 302 and 303.

"We’re thinking the amount of traffic here, that it might be time to do a four lane,” he says. “And if the 303 and the 302 were done, then that would relieve a lot of the traffic that comes from Marchand and Woodridge and all over the rural (area), they would just use (those roads) instead of coming down the 52.”

Weiss says it is time to do something to improve safety.

"I think we just have a tremendous amount of traffic coming down this highway and something should be able to be done,” he adds.

Weiss believes there is adequate space to add lanes to Highway 52, and he is certain that the traffic volume warrants these measures to improve safety for motorists.

Previously, Weiss stated that council was waiting to hear back from the province regarding a request to lower the speed limit along Highway 52 as motorists drive past the village of La Broquerie.

In 2015, La Broquerie council had sent a letter to the province to ask for highways 302 and 303 to be paved.
