A house along Reimer Avenue in Steinbach sustained significant damage from fire early Wednesday morning.

Steinbach Fire Chief Kel Toews says his department was called to the residence shortly after one o'clock. The bungalow is located between Third Street and Fourth Street.

"When we arrived, the house was fully involved," says Toews.

He notes fire had breached all of the windows and doors as well as one of the gable ends.

"So, we took appropriate action, we went to a defensive attack and extinguished it using water and foam," he explains.

According to Toews, there were two occupants home at the time of the fire. Both individuals had already left the residence by the time firefighters arrived. He notes they were taken to hospital for some smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but Toews says foul play is not suspected.

He says the main floor is a total loss and is not sure whether the basement can be salvaged. Toews has provided a damage estimate of about $250,000.

Crews were on scene until about 5 am.
