CAA Manitoba would like to offer a few tips for motorists heading out in the stormy weather.

With Environment Canada calling for snow and strong winds in the next day or two, Elisha Dacey, Communications Manager with CAA Manitoba says motorists should reconsider their travel plans over the next few days until the storm passes and roads are clear.

However, if you must travel, she reminds members that CAA trucks cannot rescue people stranded on closed roads. If at anytime you feel you are in immediate danger, she says you should call local police or RCMP for assistance.

When driving in stormy weather, she says you should leave plenty of space between you and the vehicle ahead, noting your stopping distance increases on ice and snow.

Dacey urges motorists to stay on main roads. She notes back roads may not always be well plowed during winter storm events.

Another tip is to always keep a phone charger in your car. According to Dacey, you cannot call for help without a charged phone and you will need battery power until help arrives.

Also, she encourages motorists to avoid using overdrive or cruise control, noting you want as much focus and control of your vehicle as you possibly can.

Dacey also reminds drivers to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles. This includes tow trucks and service vehicles.

And finally, she says you should never pass a snowplow. Dacey says passing a snowplow could result in a severe and even fatal collision. She urges motorists to stay well back when you see the flashing lights of a snowplow.
