Council for the Rural Municipality of Hanover has given approval to a request for a dog breeding and boarding kennel southeast of Sarto.

Tammy Millar is a property owner in the area. According to Hanover administration, in 2010, the previous owners of the property were granted approval to operate a dog breeding kennel with up to ten dogs. Because of a standard condition imposed on dog kennels in the municipality, the approval was considered automatically revoked upon the transfer of land.

Millar appeared before Hanover Council on Wednesday. As the new owner, she wishes to re-establish a dog kennel on the site. Her plan is to breed miniature poodles, Irish doodles and golden doodles. Millar's request was for up to 25 dogs on the property. She says they are in the process of renovating an existing barn into the kennel facility and as a result do not have a vet inspection available.

The proposal did not find favour from all neighbours. Hanover Council received letters from two individuals who opposed the plan over noise concerns.

Hanover Reeve Stan Toews says ultimately Council approved the request. However, instead of a maximum of 25 dogs on the property, Millar will be allowed 15. Also, she will be required to contain the animals indoors from 9 pm to 8 am.

Millar told Council she has four breeding dogs and that all dogs on her property will be completely contained with none of them running loose. She says there will probably never be more than seven permanent dogs on her property.
