A committee is being formed to help educate residents of Mitchell on the dos and don'ts of ATV riding.

Hanover Reeve Stan Toews says for quite some time now, there have been underage children riding ATVs and off-road vehicles on the roads around Mitchell. Toews says Steinbach RCMP have suggested a committee be formed to help locals better understand the rules.

Hanover's Protective Services Committee has now recommended to Council that their Chief Administrative Officer and Bylaw Enforcement Officer recruit local residents for this committee. According to Toews, the Mitchell South ATV use ad hoc committee will include a couple of councillors, local residents and representation from Steinbach RCMP.

"Trying to get an ad hoc committee to maybe educate people that it's not in their best interest to have children driving on the road," shares Toews. "I believe there was even a mishap there a while back."

Toews is referring to the crash that happened June 2nd involving a car and a teenage girl on a dirt bike. The collision happened near the intersection of Centre Street and Cranberry Road, just south of Mitchell. RCMP believe the 13-year-old biker from Mitchell had been riding north in the southbound lane while a cloud of dust obscured the vision of the 69-year-old male motorist from Steinbach who was proceeding south. The teenage girl was taken to Children's Hospital in stable condition, with non-life-threatening injuries.
