Linda Schroeder shows how the waffles are cooked in the traditional way

Traditional favourites continue to be a popular menu item at Mennonite Heritage Village in Steinbach.  MHV Auxiliary President Linda Schroeder says the Auxiliary works out of the short order building close to the Livery Barn and is again preparing waffles with vanilla sauce and hundreds of roll kuchen this Pioneer Days weekend.  She notes the waffles are probably their best seller and people start lining up at lunchtime each day waiting for the first few batches to come off the irons.

Roll kuchen is a favourite for afternoon coffee break and is best when served up with a slice of watermelon.  The group of 20-30 volunteers have been fine tuning the process for several years and Schroeder feels their system can't be beat.  And that is good news because the group puts out up to 500 waffles each day.

The current building was built about ten years ago and houses the waffle and roll kuchen production but is also shared with the fast food service of burgers and fries.  She explains the auxiliary runs the food sales as a fundraiser and puts those dollars towards a variety of projects at the museum.  For example they just purchased a new cooler for the main building and have put in some new draperies for the auditorium.  Schroeder reports last year they raised just under $50,000 which comes from the waffle and roll kuchen sales.
