There was a good turnout on Sunday for the Family Bike Jam, put on by Strong Towns Steinbach

People of all ages cycled as a group from the Jake Epp Library, along the pathways, for a leisure ride around the city.

Chris Krahn says this was a great way to enjoy nature while creating awareness of the advocacy group, which looks at encouraging smart growth of the city.

“You’ve got these massive, huge grocery stores that open on the edge of town, which is very hard to get to without a car, right? So, what Strong Towns likes to encourage is smaller grocery stores, corner stores, something that opens up very close to where people live and that makes it extremely accessible to get to.”

Krahn says cycling is a more affordable way to get around and the group looks at ways to make it a more desirable option.

“The quickest route isn’t always necessarily the most enjoyable route or even the most comfortable route,” he says. “So that's another thing that we'd like to draw attention to is, if people are wanting to bike, if we can show that there's interest in cycling in town, maybe there should be some infrastructure to support that.”

More bike racks for people to lock up their bikes when they ride to stores or other businesses. That is one of the things Krahn believes is important. But he notes there seems to be a lot of theft which makes it difficult to know if a locked-up bike will be safe in Steinbach.

The group has a website which offers more information on their goals. It states that, “Strong Towns Steinbach is a non-partisan, grassroots group dedicated to increasing community awareness of the Strong Towns Approach; advocating cities to be safe, livable and inviting.”
