Grunthal Livestock Market along PR #205

It has turned into a great fall for cattle producers here in the southeast.

Henry Penner of the Grunthal Livestock Market says feeder cattle and bred cows are getting premium prices. He explains, "I think there's a shortage of cattle out there. After BSE a lot of cows went to the kill floor and right now the factory is light on producing calves. So the cow/calf guys will get paid this year which is good to see. The beef producers are leaving our place here with a smile on their face and it's enjoyable to sell cattle once again." Penner adds there's always demand for good bred cows but it's especially high this year as producers look to expand their herds.

Meanwhile, he says the liquidation of some cattle herds due to flooding along Lake Manitoba has not had much impact on prices. Penner notes the number of additional cattle being sold is relatively small as compared to the North American market.
