After three consecutive terms serving as an HSD trustee, Ruby Wiens of Niverville has announced she will not seek re-election.

For the past twelve years Wiens has represented Ward 1 of the division which includes Kleefeld, New Bothwell, Crystal Springs, and her hometown of Niverville.

Wiens says seeing the Niverville school come to fruition is among her greatest accomplishments while on the school board: “That's something that we’ve really worked towards for the past 8 years. I’m so excited that the families in my community will have a space for their kids to learn. I really wanted to serve on the board until the school was announced.”

Another board item that Wiens indicates was dear to her heart was the drafting of the Respect for Human Diversity Policy in response to Bill 18. The policy supports and protects members of the LGBTQ community and their families within the division. Comments Wiens: “I just feel passionately that our schools need to be safe, welcoming and accepting places for everyone.”

Though much has been achieved during her time on the school board, Wiens says she just became a grandmother and looks forward to spending more time with family in the coming years. “I will miss being part of something bigger than myself,” notes Wiens, who adds it is great to know you have made a difference in the division your grandchildren will one day be attending.
