The Trans-Canada Highway from the Highway #12 interchange to Dufresne will be down to one lane each way for most of the summer. Doug Struthers is the Director of Manitoba Infrastructure for the Southeast Region. He says they will be doing a few projects in that eight-kilometre stretch of roadway, including fixing the two rough sections where new box culverts were installed in recent years.

"The surface over the box culverts was just patched, so this year we have a contract where we will be digging out those areas and resurfacing them. We are resurfacing the PTH #12 interchange as well. That also includes reconstructing and lowering the lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway under the overpass to increase our overheight dimensions."

Struthers explains they will lower the roadway under the Highway #12 overpass by about 15-17 centimetres to improve clearance under the bridge to a full five metres.

He adds another project on that stretch of roadway this summer involves improvements to the Highway #1 intersection at Dufresne.

"We will construct a left turn and a right turn lane turning into Dufresne from the east and the west to improve the traffic flow."

Struthers says while all of these changes will make the highway better, there will be traffic disruptions.

"Unfortunately, we'll be closing one set of the four-lane at a time for most of the summer, right from Dufresne and going about eight kilometres east, just east the PTH #12 interchange. That section will be down to one lane each way for most of the summer."

The work is scheduled to start right after spring thaw and wrap up in October.

Rough sections of pavement over two sets of box culverts between the Hwy #12 interchange and Dufresne will be removed and replaced with a new, smooth surface.
