The Fire Chief for Steinbach has confirmed it was a lightning strike that caused a house fire in Steinbach Friday morning.

Firefighters were able to save a majority of the personal belongings of a family whose roof and attic caught fire.

The Steinbach Fire Department was called just before 8am to a home on First Street near Donald Street.

"When we got there, there was light smoke coming out of the roof," notes Fire Chief Kel Toews. "We sent crews inside, into the attic and onto the roof." Toews adds crews did a good job of containing the fire to the roof and the attic. He says everyone was out of the house safely when they arrived.

Toews says the smoke damage is not too bad but adds because of the amount of water they had to use, there will be a fair bit of water damage. Toews has offered a damage estimate of $200,000.
