There were numerous power outages in southeastern Manitoba after a severe thunderstorm rolled through the region Friday morning.

A spokesperson from Manitoba Hydro reports 1,700 customers were without power at one point with the majority of those outages occurring at the south end of Steinbach. Manitoba Hydro Public Affairs Manager Scott Powell says it is methodical work to make repairs after a storm.

"Typically the causes are downed trees, lightning strikes, or other physical issues that have impacted our infrastructure. Once we have received a call and we know where that call is coming from, we can trace back the electrical circuit. Our crews do what is called a line patrol which is getting in the truck, driving along and looking for areas that are down and once we are down we fix that area. We continue along until we get all the areas cleared."

A number of customers report power went out around 8:00 A.M. and was restored about an hour later.

Meanwhile, residents of the southeast are cleaning up. Many downed tree branches can be seen around Steinbach as well as a few flipped trampolines, and even a knocked over tree that narrowly missed a house on Southwood Drive.
