A first-term councillor in the Town of Ste. Anne is holding off on his aspirations to be mayor in order to first get more experience. Yvan St. Vincent feels he needs to spend more time as a councillor before making a run to be the head of council.

"I had considered taking a run at mayor but then quickly realized that it was a bigger learning curve than expected, being on council. So I thought before I do that, I am going to try to get on as a councillor for another term and, basically, just improve on the things we've been doing. We've done a ton of road work, sports and recreation stuff with the splash pad and all those kinds of things and I just want to continue to see that kind of growth happening."

St. Vincent, who is also the principal of Ste. Anne Collegiate, says while council got a lot of projects done over the past four years, there is something else that he is most proud of.

"Probably the things I'm most proud of is the fact that we've been able to develop a better financial plan. We have a sustainability plan in place now so we're not always having to do debentures (borrow money) every time the town needs to purchase something. Also, just the more welcoming feel that we have at our town office now. I think residents and developers are getting friendlier responses and getting more collaborative responses when they come to our town office."

St. Vincent adds town council has also made efforts to balance development in the community.

"I think we're being a little bit more deliberate now in making sure that we have a variety of growth. There was a while where it was all multi-family which has been great, but now we're trying to see more single-family dwellings as well as trying to bring some small and larger businesses into town to try and spread out that tax base for everyone."

Going forward, St. Vincent says council needs to focus on developing more activities for all age groups so that there are things to do for everyone. He also wants to nurture continued growth and expansion of the police department.
