A rash of thefts in the southeast quarter of Steinbach has some residents concerned.

Dorinda Penner is among those impacted by a series of break-and-enters that, she says, began in late December. Penner says she has spoken with homeowners living along Harmony Lane, Deerfield Trail, Hespeler South, and the 52 Highway who are all reporting thefts from their storage containers or garages in the past two months.

“My concern isn’t just that things are being stolen and that damage is being done as they break into these facilities, my concern is of the potential anxiety this creates in people for their wellbeing and safety.”

Penner believes the crimes are drug-related.

“If it is to feed an addiction of some sort, I have huge compassion for that,” she says. “I understand that addiction is a disease but there are other people that matter and these thefts are putting extra pressure and mental stress on these people.”

Penner counts herself as one who has had an increase in paranoia of late.

“I go for a walk outside with my dog in the mornings and now I find myself looking over my shoulder and hoping no one is there.”

Steinbach RCMP say they are aware of this string of thefts but are unsure if they are related. They do, however, affirm Penner’s supposition; due to the nature of the small items being taken, police say it is likely that the crimes are being fueled by drugs. RCMP say the investigation is ongoing, but they have no solid leads at this time.

Penner says she has security cameras stationed behind her business on Highway 52 and has caught multiple suspects lurking around her property.

Anyone who can positively identify the individuals is asked to contact the Steinbach RCMP.
