La Broquerie Council intends to allow residential development on the La Vérendrye Golf Course.

A local developer obtained possession of the land earlier this year and hopes to convert part of the green space into housing for seniors. Deputy Reeve Ivan Normandeau says he sees no issues with this plan.

“I believe he wants to build 55-plus residences on the golf course there which is great for our community because that is one of the products we are lacking right now.”

Earlier this week, Council gave first reading to a zoning bylaw amendment that will permit housing on the green space. The La Vérendrye Golf Course rests on a 160-acre piece of property which, according to Normandeau, is roughly 60 acres larger than the average golf course. He says that is what makes this a feasible project.

“There is definitely excess space on the course and definitely a lot of areas that can be developed and bring in some housing to La Broquerie.”

The ability to live on a golf course is common across the United States but is fairly unique to Manitoba and Normandeau says he is glad to see that kind of innovative development happening locally. He adds the municipality hopes to partner with La Vérendrye management to link the larger community to the golf course through a network of pathways.
