A boating injury at Lac du Bonnet in August will not lead to charges against an off-duty officer from Winnipeg Police Service.

On August 3rd, the officer operating a Sea-Doo in the lake, was towing an inner tube with three children on it, when a boat passed between the watercraft and the tube. The tow rope became entangled with the boat's propeller and an eight-year-old child on the inner tube received a head injury that required eight stitches.

The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) of Manitoba interviewed the officer, the boater and two nearby witnesses and noted significant discrepancies in the statements provided by the boater. The IIU has concluded the boater was attempting to deflect responsibility for the accident from himself, onto the officer.

It was further determined the officer's actions did not violate any regulations on towing in water.

RCMP continue to investigate the boater's conduct and responsibility for the accident and it is not yet known whether any charges will be laid.
