Steinbach RCMP would like to advise the public of a telephone scam that has been circulating. Sergeant Joanne Ryll says at least three people have contacted the detachment today to report the same scam.

Ryll says an individual will receive a phone call, where the caller identifies themself as Constable Marshall from the Steinbach Police. The caller reports the individual's Social Insurance Number has been compromised.

The individual will get a second phone call, and this time is told to visit a very specific establishment in the area, and told to withdraw cash and is then given further instructions on where to deposit that money. The individual is told that if they do not comply, there will be three police officers from the Steinbach detachment who will come and arrest them the following day.

Ryll says this is a scam. She says there are a few things that should immediately tip someone off that this is not legitimate. First of all, Ryll says you should consider it suspicious if somebody calls you, asking you to withdraw money. And, for a caller to specify a certain location where this withdrawal must happen, is also suspicious. Thirdly, Ryll says if you receive a call that your Social Insurance Number has been compromised, call Service Canada. She notes Steinbach RCMP would never be asked to assist with a tampered Social Insurance Number.
