A developer in Steinbach is planning to build a multi-family housing complex on six lots along First Street, about one block west of 7-Eleven. The lots run from 47 First Street to 77 First Street. The proposal says phase one would see three of the lots developed into nine, two-storey townhouses that would contain a total of 36 housing units.

City councillor Susan Penner moved approval of First Reading of the re-zoning bylaw.

"It allows us to open up a public hearing on the issue and get feedback from the public on what their thoughts are on that."

Deputy Mayor Cari Penner agrees.

"We often have times where residences have been bought up by a developer with the hope that, someday, they can turn that into multi-family housing. Sometimes this works very well in the neighbourhood. We'd like to give the public a chance to speak to this proposal."

A public hearing has been set for April 17th where neighbours will be invited to give their input on the proposal.
