Approval was given Tuesday night for another hotel to be built in Steinbach.

Harv Barkman has made an offer to purchase the former Bumpers property along Highway 52. Most recently that building served as Hometown Grill, a seasonal restaurant which remained closed this summer.

(Harv Barkman meets with Steinbach City Council)Steinbach City Council gave approval Tuesday at a conditional use hearing. Barkman says the plan now is to reopen the restaurant, construct a 50 suite hotel and build a heated storage facility in the back for things like highway tractors.

Barkman says the goal is to break ground on the hotel this fall yet. He says the two-story building could take 12 months to construct.

The all-season restaurant is expected to open much sooner. Barkman is hopeful that the 50's style restaurant will be up and running before Christmas. But before that can happen they will close in the one side and do some renovations.

Barkman says the idea has been two years in the making. He thinks a hotel there will be a good fit for Southland Church, which has an expanding ministry and is often in need of hotel rooms when hosting events.

Steinbach Mayor Chris Goertzen says he looks forward to the hotel opening.

"We think it's an appropriate space," says Goertzen. "It has adequate space and it looks like it fits in well with the surroundings."

Goertzen says during the Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games there was an incredible influx of people visiting Steinbach and additional hotel units would have been helpful.

"More and more we see additional hotel units being needed," says Goertzen. "So it's always encouraging to see someone who wants to invest in our community and provide that service to our visitors to our community."

According to Barkman, the entire site could employ between 30 and 35 people.

He notes there is potential on that eight-acre site for additional hotel suites if the demand is there.

"If it's busy and it's full all the time, obviously we will go to phase two," he says. "There is room for expansion if the community requires it."

Bumpers on 52 opened in April, 2012.
