Ste. Anne Fire Chief John Desrochers says the loss of the former longstanding fire chief will leave a big hole in the community.

Ken Dayment passed away Thursday afternoon at the Ste Anne Hospital after a tough battle with various health issues. Desrochers notes Dayment played a large role in planning the future of the fire department.

"Ken was a huge part of our Ste. Anne Fire Department, he was a member for over 30 years and approximately 25 of those as chief. Ken was a huge advocate for the department; he essentially got the department where it is today regarding a new station and equipment."

Desrochers says over the years, he really looked up to Dayment.

"Ken recruited me 22 years ago as a firefighter and I served under him for 19 years roughly until I was able to move into the chief position but he was definitely a solid mentor for me."

To commemorate Dayment's life, both the fire and police department are flying their flags at half-mast as a mark of respect for Ken and his family. Desrochers adds not only did Dayment have an influence on him but he played a large role in the community.

"Ken's loss or our loss is a huge hole in our department and our community just because of Ken's dedication and efforts for our town. He'll be sorely missed but he definitely leaves a legacy."

A funeral to celebrate Ken's life and his legacy will be held Friday, December 15 at Birchwood Funeral Chapel in Steinbach.
