Getting up on stage is step one.

Southeastern Manitoba Festival dance adjudicator Catherine Wreford says she is amazed by anyone who can get up on a stage and dance, perform, or sing. Wreford notes she loves being able to express herself through dance and that's what she looks for in a performance.

"Using that nervousness [of being on stage], that excitement to really step up a level and perform as though you were on broadway, that's what I tell my kids. So, the people that get up on stage next weekend when I'm there, I will love all of them. They can't do anything that will make me think ehh, I really don't like that. I will be like, great job for getting up on stage, and here's maybe what we can work on."

Wreford says she encourages performers to stand up tall and facial expressions is a big part of what she's look for.

"I don't really care what your feet or legs are doing, but your arms and your face, if that is engaging me, I won't notice your feet. Even when you're dancing you have to act. Dancing means nothing if you're not enveloping the soul character of the piece."

The first half of dance concluded this past weekend with the second half taking place this coming Saturday and Sunday. The Stars Gala wraps up the festival on March 21.
