On September first, Donna Wilson, her husband, friend Wally and her 2-year-old grandson Elliot were on their way home to Steinbach from Winnipeg.

Heading south on Highway 12 near Ste. Anne, Donna spotted an SUV quickly driving through the intersection between Hwy 12 and 210.

”I looked and I could see an SUV coming out of there and I could tell they were going at such a speed. I could tell they weren't going to stop and I screamed ‘they're not going to stop’ and next thing you know we were T-boned.”

Emergency crews responded to the collision, taking all four in the vehicle to the Ste Anne Hospital.

Wilson's grandson Elliot in his car seatThank God for car seats because that's what saved Elliot. Not a scratch on him. I can't even believe it because the three adults have lots of bruises and neck injuries and my back is bad."

As paramedics and doctors took care of her and her family, Wilson began to hear a common theme from these health professionals. That intersection is dangerous.

"The doctor that discharged me there that night. She told me that there's at least one bad accident there a week and I’m like how can that be?"

Wilson was incredulous. She took to social media to see if the claim was true. She was overwhelmed by the response.

She heard from other local nurses too.

"She told me that Ste Anne is a beautiful place and they have a beautiful hospital there but she said she wouldn't want to work there just because there's so many accidents."

In September of 2020, an announcement was made that the intersection would be studied and changes made.
